I have a question... you mentioned that a designer bills you upon delivery in most cases.... what is the time frame between placing an order at the show and delivery... is there a time frame that can be estimated for budget and cash flow purposes?

Again, very informative. I too am new to the game but sell to the boutiques and on-line at www.brapples.com It is fun and scarey when you first start. You upfront a lot of money just hoping that someone falls in love with your products. Your husband wonders how long all these boxes of products will remained walled up in the garage--and truthfully I do to. But with patience and determination I continue to learn, love it, and persevere. I think if i didn't pursue this I would always wonder what the outcome would have been. The biggest lesson is tell everyone you know what it is you do (shamelessly)because I am always delighted when it leads to more networking and connections that I never knew existed.

^Hi Zang, it's usually just 4 different pieces per style, and you get to choose how you mix up the sizes. Hope that helps!

So glad I stumbled upon this site. It's been really frustrating being able to find people who want to help in getting into the same business that they're into, and I applaud you for wanting to share your knowledge with the rest of us. I am working on starting my own online boutique as well (baby and maternity).

I have a question. When you order miniumums per style, can you order like 4 different sizes per style or do you have to order like 4 pieces of size small of the same style? Thanks.

Hey Marvin! You can choose between cod, business check , factoring and credit card. Usually they charge your card upon delivery. There are SOME lines that will charge you a percentage up front. I've only worked with one label that does that though.

I've been looking for this forever! Thank you so much for you r informative and encouraging blog. I've never been to fashion school or have any idea about this business but I am very interested from a financial standpoint and your writing is opening the way for me! If I could ask you a question?

About "minimums": When the sales rep gives you the minimum order size, what are the payment terms usually? Is it all up front or consignment or do you have a window of time to pay them in?

Thank you so much for your time! Blessings on your business.

^Hi Priscilla! Yeah, it will arrive within the window, although Ive had them come before and Im sure it's not unheard of for them to come after. They bill you when they're ready to ship it out to you. Usually we give them a cc and then we see the charges appear right around the time it's about to ship.

My sales have been good! I'm still using UPS and USPS sometimes, which I might end up switching over to, I'm still not sure though. I'm going to the market in LA next month. I cant wait to buy for fall/holiday!

Hey Kim!

Always so very informative. So the delivery date means that they can arrive anytime within that window? And will they bill you at the beginning end or middle for items? I have seen a couple of sheets and heard for example ie:10/1 start and 11/1 end. That means they will ship between the start and end date right? Thanks for your help, how are sales? And did you start using Fed Ex yet? Will you be attending any upcoming markets?
