Bakersfield Life Shoot

17 Nov

So for the last two weeks since I opened my retail space, I’ve spent a lot of my downtime trying to pick out the right kind of advertisement to get the word out on the opening. Considering I’m on a budget and I don’t have a ton of merchandise, I have to be very careful about the budget. The first ad I’m doing is with Bakersfield Life Magazine.

Initially I planned on doing a 1/8th page ad, which would feature my logo, address and whatever product shots I could fit; the usual. But I inquired about their products around town page, which LOOKS more like an editorial and it isn’t labeled as “advertisement”. As it turns out, this type of an ad is less expensive than the other. Basically I’ll have a short write up and photos of my products, as well as directions to the shop, etc. The only downside is that it doesn’t do as much for brand recognition, but I guess that will come with time.

Here’s a picture from the “set”…okay, not really, it’s just me in the middle of fiddling with everything and trying to decide the right way to merchandise the items for the photo. I decided to focus on the Linea Pelle handbags and the brand new Voom by Joy Han Eyelet Dress which is……amazing. As you can see! That dress actually isn’t on the floor yet (although it IS on the website), I’ll be putting it out after black Friday, right around the time the issue drops. Gotta keep rotating the merchandise to keep it fresh!

Glad to see your going to be advertising, but you are in the wrong magazine! The reader’s of Bakersfield Life CAN’T afford the great clothes and accessories you offer – You should call Bakersfield Magazine, way more classy!…the difference is like buying a Label from your web site and buying a Fake from the swap meet.

^Actually, when you compare their circulation with their demographic breakdowns they equal out about the same. But I’m looking at ads in that magazine as well!

    Off post question..
Do you know if it’s possible to contact all the designers I plan on selling in my store and asking them for their line sheet..and buying stock for March or April..I’m currently getting everything together to open my own store..just haven’t done a tradeshow yet..but I all ready know some of the designers I wish to carry..

^Yeah, of course you can do that, but just so you know a lot of the collections are closed for the Spring so you might end up having to wait for immediates.

    Hi,

Couple of questions. How do immediates work? How long does it take to get them, do all lines do immediates?

Also, have tried pitching to national magazines? I always see online boutiques featured in marie claire and Lucky.

    Do you advertise on Facebook?

What kind of camera do you own for your photography?

One last thing, as I’m sure all your readers are curious, how is Ooh La Luxe doing? Have you seen a growth in traffic/following yet?

^Hey Emily! I don’t do facebook yet but I will soon. I have a twitter though. Facebook confuses me lol. I havent tried pitching to national magazines, Im not even sure how to go about doing that but Ill prob try it soon. I have a professional photographer who does all my pictures. Im not sure what kind of camera she uses though.

Oh and the site is doing great, which is why I was able to expand. Ill answer the rest of questions in a new post because Im sure everyone else would like to read the answers too :)

Thanks for answering my questions, Kim! This blog really is helpful. I plan on starting my online boutique but the merchandise will be slightly lower priced.

About facebook, it’s so easy. And I think it’s the best way (and most inexpensive way) to build more traffic! I highly suggest it.
    Thanks again!
